Carl Zeiss Sponsorship of Sports Optics to Barn Swallow Project 2011/2012
Mount Moreland, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa
The Barn Swallow season started as normal from mid October and the
Barn Swallows were arriving beautifully, then towards the end of November we had severe cold weather that lasted
almost 3 weeks. We were covered in darkness and lashed with extremely cold rain. This displaced the Barn Swallows
from their roosting grounds at Mount Moreland and they vacated for
warmer areas, had they had stayed they would have died from the low temperatures experienced.
Every evening they would fly by along the horizons but not come in to roost until a couple of weeks ago
(end January). This resulted in disappointment over the Christmas period by the spectators whom came to see the
Barn Swallow phenomena, but with the assistance of the Carl Zeiss sponsored Sports Optics many were able to witness
the Barn Swallows as they moved through the area.
The thrill as spectators see the Barn Swallows through the Sports Optics is a moment to be treasured.
The Barn Swallows are now arriving in full mass and have returned to the Lake Victoria reedbeds to roost. The
migration will begin next month and last until mid to end of April.
We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Carl Zeiss for their generous sponsorship of Sports
Optics for the current Barn Swallow season at Mount Moreland and to Craig Smith for all assistance in making this
Every evening the sponsored sports optics were used by local, national and international tourists.
