Froggy Pond Viewing Site Project

Froggy Pond Viewing Site Project
In 2010/2011 Barn Swallow season, the Barn Swallows decided that they would all roost at the Froggy Pond wetland. We were not prepared for such a change in roosting patterns and approaching ACSA (Airports Company South Africa) for assistance and sponsorship for this project, a plan of action was drafted and presented. ACSA agreed to the proposal and the project came to fruition Ocober/November 2011. The Mount Moreland Conservancy thank ACSA for their contirbution/sponsorship and support of this unique project.

Swallow viewing prior to site establishment
This swallow season (2010/2011) at Mount Moreland has been incredibly hard work due to the fact that the Barn Swallows relocated to the Froggy Pond reedbed because the Lake Victoria reedbed underwent natural regeneration.
Despite all the tribulation I worked even harder to make sure that the swallow spectators saw what they had come to see.
Plan 1: Initially I would walk spectators over to the gazebo and we would view the Froggy Pond skies from there but this proved inadequate as the spectators were not getting the full ‘Swallow Experience’ and were only seeing the top layer of the swallow display, not impressive at all.
Plan 2: I then came up with a new plan and every evening thereafter I would lead a convoy of spectators in their cars around the corner and once all had re-parked we would view the swallows from the street as this was the only available option, a Swallow viewing street party, I would joke with the swallow watchers whom were very appreciative of the efforts, PR and overall execution of this plan. It worked, everyone thoroughly enjoyed this ‘Swallow Experience’ but a plan and execution thereof was needed to be more organised for the future.
